adding documents to a collection

Hi, I will implement a web interface to edit and update specific nodes in an existing database. This will probably be controlled mainly by the node-id. Therefore it is no good idea to change the collection during the editing process because node-ids would change. However, it seems that when adding a document to a collection it will be integrated *after* all existing documents. Is it guaranteed that when adding a new document to a collection, no existing node-ids are changed? I would have to re-index the collection when adding new documents. BaseX 7.1.1: The Feedback Release

Reusing connections to BaseX

Hi, I have a question about the BaseX server. We're using it from a J2EE application (which is the client), and so we've implemented a connection pool in the style done by many other database drivers. We are getting Broken Pipe errors, indicating that a connection has been disconnected. My question: when does BaseX disconnect, and is there a way for a client to learn this? For instance, if there's a syntax error in a XQUERY, should BaseX disconnect? If a BaseXException is thrown by the Java driver? Currently, we mark the connection as dead when an IOException or EOF occurs during the handling of one request, but we keep it alive when a BaseXException occurs, such as when we submit an ill-formed XQUERY. We could avoid pooling, connecting and disconnecting for every query, but obviously that would be expensive. Or we could "ping" the server before issueing the actual query, but that's awkward, too. How do others handle this problem? - Godmar

XML could not be parsed - DOCTYPE

Hello everyone ! Can someone tell me why BaseX could not parse my xml ? (Tip) Saxon-CE, Presentation of XML data

Hello all, I wanted to pass on a tip about using XML data client-side (in a web browser) with Saxon-CE as it could be quite exciting to pair up with BaseX. BaseX@Debian Processing of basex_7.1-1_amd64.changes

BaseX 7.1 is now available in Debian's unstable branch. In 10 days it'll will move to testing. Ubuntu has an automated process and will fetch the package from Debian. Recursive query performance

Howdy, all -- First, a note that bears saying -- I'm very, *very* excited by BaseX; this is my first use of the database, and I'm already extremely impressed. My immediate use case centers around the following pair of functions: declare function local:immediate_requirements($e as element(project)) as element(project)* { doc("inventory.xml")/report/project[ ./classifiers/ivy/publications/artifact/@name = $e/classifiers/ivy/dependencies/dependency/@name ] }; declare function local:requirements($e as element(project)) as element(project)* { let $direct := local:immediate_requirements($e) return $direct | $direct/local:requirements(.) }; However -- while evaluating immediate_requirements() is very fast (on the scale of 72ms for one of the larger project elements in my sample corpus, and a total under 1600ms ms to evaluate for _every_ project element in said corpus), evaluating the recursive requirements() function for even a single top-level project can require as much as two minutes to execute. Should I be writing this function differently? My expectation was that, due to XQuery's functional nature, the database should be able to avoid needing to evaluate local:immediate_requirements more than once for a single input element, capping the worst-case execution time not far over the cost of evaluating that single-stage evaluation once over every possible project element in the document; however, true worst-case execution time is obviously far worse. Thank you very much for any guidance on offer, and for this excellent tool.

Hi, I have three questions concerning working with the full-text index: The first question is about "distance" information. Given this query: (1) 'contains text "Kopf Sand Stecken" all words using stemming using language "de"' There is no difference to: (2) 'contains text ("Nase" ftand "Sand" ftand "stecken") using stemming using language "de"' both queries deliver 4 nodes. If I would like to find the query terms within a certain distance, adding 'distance at most 10 words' for (1) I get 2 nodes (a subset of the 4 from the first run), but for (2) I still get all 4 nodes. The information concerning distance doesn't seem to be considered. For my application this is no problem, since I have to go for the "ftand"-variant to get proper marking, but in general this looks strange. The second question is about "ftand" and "ftor". If I try these queries: (3) 'contains text ("Nase" ftand "Sand" ftand "stecken") using stemming using language "de" distance at most 10 words' (4) 'contains text ("Kopf" ftand "Sand" ftand "stecken") using stemming using language "de" distance at most 10 words I get 2 hits for (3) and 11 for (4). So I assumed I would get 13 hits (the ones from (3) and the ones from (4) when changing the query to: (5) 'contains text (("Nase" ftor "Kopf") ftand "Sand" ftand "stecken") using stemming using language "de" distance at most 10 words' However, I get 6 hits -- none of them containing "Nase" (there is no difference, if the query starts with '"Nase" ftor "Kopf"' or with '"Kopf" ftor "Nase"'). Did I mess something up? The third question is about the full-text index itself. When applying fuzzy search or using wildcards, the full-text index is not applied -- resulting in a time out on my website, I need 341859.09 ms in the GUI for applying 'ft:mark (//*[text() contains text ("Korb" ftand "geben") using fuzzy][self::*:p or self::*:l])' to my 3 GB collection. The information at the "Full-Text" tab says: - Structure: Trie - Stemming: ON - Case Sensitivity: ON - Diacritics: ON - Language: German - Size: 1 GB - Entries: 1743744 I created the full-text index with the option "Support Wildcards", too, but this information is not shown in the Database properties. When creating the index, "SET WILDCARDS true" is shown. I used stemming, casesensitivity, diacritics, and wildcards -- is this an unrecommended combination? Problem with "create database"?

Hello! I see the command "create database" creates a database although there is another with the same name, destroying the existing one. I think that this is not normal... I've tested using the option in the GUI and also using Java client (method create in BaseXClient.java) Thanks, Isidre
