as there has recently been some discussion on that, both on the list and internally, we're currently trying to find a satisfying solution for the next BaseX 7.3 (due in ~2 weeks), which will be documented in the following GitHub issue:

We'll most probably remove the "client" mode, which was triggering connections to existing BaseX server instances (either local or remote), and add the default mode to our web application. As soon as this is implemented, you'll be able to access the same databases via the Java API and the 1984 port.
