Hm, didn't experience this before; have you tried BaseX on another machine, or user other ports?
Tried it on my pc and on the server, same result.
By the help of your mail, I noticed that our documentation was out-of-dated; you need to specify -n instead -s (or try -h for help). I've updated our docs. Next, just to get sure, verify if port 7000 is opened on your server machine.
Thank you for that, found out port 7000 where not open by default, and corrected that.
With no change in the BaseXServer behavior, I where expecting som sort of console to controle the server with, but that will not happen?
You can throw in the -i argument to end up in the console mode. Note that all admin commands can as well be used from another client, which is logged in with admin rights.
I solved another problem I got an now the Client code ask for login and password, but now it just times out every time I try to log on.

When I am logging on I am able to use the default admin/admin login/password right? My CentOS server, where the BaseX server is, have a password for every user but If I have opened the port I dont need to go through any proxy there, I just use admin/admin?

Yes I get a timeout exceeded message when I try to connect with my client from my PC to the server, using standard admin/admin login. Daniel, you might try another port (e.g., the default port 1984). However, I've just run BaseX on a remote ubuntu machine on port 7000 without any problems. "bigBrother" now instead of "asf3-fileserver" i just checked it with nmap on my machine, and it says exactly the same as yours. (with BaseX Server running and without) So dont give a lot on these results.

So i guess it's a security problem. I just checked it by myself on a remote server and i didnt get any problem. So i just can give your following advices: Please make sure Java is not blocked from the firewalls on both machines and check if the port is open and the hostname or hostip is the right one. I am not getting the "can't comunnicate.."-error more and is back at the "timeout exception" again, does that make any sense? I am quite sure the ip is correct, because I am able to scan for open ports from my pc and see the same ports are open as if i scan localhost on the server. I have unblogged java on my pc, before I started on this. You could try out to upload the PHP Version: https://svn.uni-konstanz.de/dbis/basex/trunk/api/etc/php/ on a webserver and try to connect to your server with the Example.php. I have not used php before, so tell me if I doing it wrong, because i: 1) upload the BaseX.php to the server 2) install php on my pc, and check it works on the server 3) then i run the "php -f Example.php" command on my pc Do I need to do anything else than uplaod the BaseX.php file to the server? Hi Daniel, you have to do the following: 1) Configure the Example.php with your server details. You have to replace the server name and the port in the Example.php. 2) Upload the BaseX.php and the Example.php to an available webserver, with php installed. 3) Then start the BaseXServer on your server. 4) Then open with a browser the Example.php on your webserver. Hay I have tried to get this thing working since you wrote, thank you for your time spent, but I have no experience with .php and servers. And I got a problem with my browser not connecting. I googled around and found out you are not able to just browse a server with you internet browser, but I where not able to find a way to enable that (it is a CentOS server). I know this is not the kind of questions this maillist is here to answer, but I think this question is so simple in complexity that I hope you will answer it. Do I need to do anything else than uplaod the BaseX.php file to the server? Do I need to start the java BaseXServer up?
Because I get a "can`t communicate.."-error whenewer I do this.

You could try out to upload the PHP Version: https://svn.uni-konstanz.de/dbis/basex/trunk/api/etc/php/ on a webserver and try to connect to your server with the Example.php. So you could narrow the problem to server or client side. Sorry for no better adivces, but we haven't encountered the problem before.

I am quite sure the ip is correct, because I am able to scan for open ports from my pc and see the same ports are open as if i scan localhost on the server.
I have unblogged java on my pc, before I started on this.
And the server is CentOs and linux do not blog programs like on windows (if i remember right) and the port are open when i use nmap both on the server and from my pc.

So i guess it's a security problem. I just checked it by myself on a remote server and i didnt get any problem. So i just can give your following advices: Please make sure Java is not blocked from the firewalls on both machines and check if the port is open and the hostname or hostip is the right one.

I have tried to get this thing working since you wrote, thank you for your time spent, but I have no experience with .php and servers. And I got a problem with my browser not connecting. I googled around and found out you are not able to just browse a server with you internet browser, but I where not able to find a way to enable that (it is a CentOS server).
I know this is not the kind of questions this maillist is here to answer, but I think this question is so simple in complexity that I hope you will answer it. I will still google around for the answer while I wait.

Hi Daniel,
you have to do the following:
1) Configure the Example.php with your server details. You have to replace the server name and the port in the Example.php. 2) Upload the BaseX.php and the Example.php to an available webserver, with php installed. 3) Then start the BaseXServer on your server. 4) Then open with a browser the Example.php on your webserver. Then it should connect to the BaseXServer and run a query.
Now the error message or the result of the query is coming up in your browser.
