Call for Submissions Special Issue of Methodology: Experimental Survey Designs This is a call for papers for a special issue of Methodology. European Journal of Research Methods for the Behavioral and Social Sciences on Experimental Survey Designs. Methodology provides a platform for interdisciplinary exchange of methodological research and applications, covering the main disciplines of survey methodology, research methodology, and psychometrics. The last years have witnessed an increasing number of innovative applications and methodological advances in experimental survey designs. Unlike earlier types of experimental manipulations which examined method-variance only, much of this new generation of experimental manipulations embedded in general population surveys deals with substantive purposes. The aim of this special issue of Methodology is twofold: • to present methodologically oriented readers the state-of-the-art of experimental survey designs across the social sciences • to increase applied researchers’ awareness of experimental surveys as a powerful and flexible methodological tool for making causal inferences by convincing applications of this approach Methodology is therefore inviting manuscripts for a special issue on Experimental Designs in Survey Research. We welcome submissions - irrespective of academic subfield - which cover recent methodological advances and innovative substantive applications of experimental survey designs. All manuscripts will be peer reviewed by a minimum of three experts in the field. Preference will be given to manuscripts clearly demonstrating how application of experimental survey design uniquely advances knowledge in the respective area of research and/or explaining a new methodology to a broader audience. All manuscripts should be submitted via email to the Guest-editors of the special issue, Elmar Schlueter (University of Marburg), Schluet3(a)staff.uni-marburg.de and Peter Schmidt (University of Giessen), Peter.Schmidt(a)sowi.uni-giessen.de following the submission instructions for regular manuscripts. Maximum length of articles (double-spaced, 12pt font) including tables and references is 27 pages. Authors should note that the submission is intended for consideration for the special issue. The deadline for submission is 15th April 2007.

Call for papers on mobile phone usage in survey research

The second conference of the European Survey Research Association (ESRA) will be held June 25-29, 2007 in Prague, Czech Republic. A large variety of topics will be discussed, among which are sampling, nonresponse, measurement of social science concepts, evaluation of survey quality, cross-cultural research, research designs, analysis of survey data, missing data, data collection, mode effects in surveys, etc. For this conference we are organizing a session on mobile phone usage in survey research. The papers presented shall provide an overview of the experiences with mobile phone surveys in different countries. Particularly, implications of mobile phone surveys for various dimensions of the total survey error and data quality shall be discussed. Please send abstracts of around 250 (max. 500) words to the session organizers by May 1, 2007. December 2006 Research master's "Sociology and Social Research" at ICS-Utrecht Dear Colleague, I would like to draw your attention to the Master's program "Sociology and Social Research" at ICS-Utrecht and the Department of Sociology of Utrecht University. You know about the well-established and successful Ph.D training program of the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS). We meanwhile also offer a selective research master's program that covers two years and leads to an MSc degree. Our master's program prepares for subsequent Ph.D training in sociology or another social science discipline - such as Ph.D training at the ICS - and for positions as a researcher in non-university social science research institutes. The research master's program "Sociology and Social Research" offers structured and systematic training in theoretically and methodologically advanced research in sociology and the social sciences in general. The target group of students consists of promising students with a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent period of three years of undergraduate study and qualifications that justify the expectation of successful completion of the program in due time. This includes students with a BA Sociology or Social Sciences, broadly conceived and including Economics, Political Sciences, Public Administration, Demography, and (Social) Psychology. We also attract students with a background in, for example, mathematics, computer sciences, econometrics, and statistics who have an interest in practical applications and who are intrigued by the meanwhile vast and fruitful applications of various branches of mathematics, computer sciences, etc. in social science theory and research, including data analysis. The program is completely taught in English. Students from outside the Netherlands are explicitly encouraged to apply. Admission to the program is selective. "Sociology and Social Research" is one of Utrecht University's Prestige master program and thus benefits from special funds of Utrecht University. For example, students of the program are eligible for Utrecht Excellence Scholarships. These scholarships are exclusively offered for students in Utrecht University Prestige master programs. Various other stipends as well as teaching and research assistantships are available for talented applicants. Also, funding is available for participation in summer schools outside the Netherlands (for example, Essex and Ann Arbor). Applications are also welcome from those who wish to follow exclusively the first year of the program as exchange students. Some courses of the program are taught in collaboration with a similar program at ICS Groningen and with Groningen colleagues. Each year, a new year group enters the program. We are currently searching for talented candidates for the academic year 2007/2008. Courses for this group will start on September 1, 2007. Sehr geehrte Kolleginnen und Kollegen, ich möchte Sie auf die Frühjahrstagung der Sektion Methoden der Empirischen Sozialforschung in München aufmerksam machen. Deadline für die Einreichung von Vorschlägen ist der 10. Februar 2007. Call for Papers Frühjahrstagung der Sektion Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung der DGS Ort: DJI, München Datum: 23. und 24. März 2007 Lokaler Veranstalter: Walter Bien Thema: Kommunikation zwischen Wissenschaften und Politik. Beratung und Evaluation politischer Maßnahmen durch die Wissenschaft Im Vorfeld weit reichender politischer Entscheidungen wird heute regelmäßig auf das Expertenwissen von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern zurückgegriffen. Ebenso werden politische Maßnahmen häufig wissenschaftlich begleitet und in ihren Wirkungen evaluiert. Wie immer, wenn unterschiedliche Teilsysteme, die verschiedenen Logiken folgen, miteinander kommunizieren, ist diese Kommunikation nicht immer unproblematisch. Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler müssen ihre Expertise so formulieren, dass sie von der Politik verstanden werden können und relevant sind. Politikerinnen und Politiker müssen ihre Fragen an die Wissenschaft so formulieren, dass diese wissenschaftlich bearbeitbar sind und sie müssen lernen die Informationen der Wissenschaft zu interpretieren Die Beiträge sollen sich auf die spezifischen methodischen Probleme der Kommunikation zwischen Wissenschaft und Politik sowie auf die Evaluation politischer Maßnahmen beziehen. Ebenso sind Beiträge willkommen, die anhand konkreter Beratungs- oder Evaluationsprojekte die methodischen Probleme sowie mögliche Lösungsansätze aufzeigen.
