Dear colleagues, we want to draw your attention to the session "Testing the Behavioral Validity of Survey Experiments" at the 9th International Conference on Social Science Methodology (RC33 Conference) in Leicester, 11-16 September 2016. ------------------- Call for Abstracts ------------------- Many survey experiments, such as factorial surveys, conjoint analyses or choice experiments are designed to measure behavioral intentions. However, there is an ongoing discussion how well intentions measured by such experiments correspond with actual behavior. Especially, it remains an important open research question how and to what extent the levels and determinants of behavioral intentions and choices made in actual decision situations are related. Even given high quality measurements of intentions by survey experiments testing the behavioral validity of these intentions is challenging. First, actual behavioral alternatives are restricted by non-experimental set environmental conditions. Hence, the relevance of intentions for behavioral outcomes depends on the situational context. Second, survey data on behavioral outcome are often prone to unobserved heterogeneity. Finally, it is often a practical challenge to collect data on intentions and comparable actual behavior, in particular of the same sample of participants. This session addresses issues linked to cross-validating experimentally measured intentions in surveys with corresponding behavioral data. Welcome are all contributions discussing theoretical models, empirical designs, analytic strategies and exemplary applications aiming to overcome related problems. In particular we invite papers dealing with at least one of the following questions: Which theoretical models are useful to specify the relationship between intentions and actual behavior in a general and empirical testable fashion? Which empirical designs can help to test the behavioral validity of intentions? Which data sources can serve as behavioral benchmark for validating intentions? What are the advantages and limitations of a validation strategy using declared behavior in surveys? What are the advantages and limitations of a validation strategy using observed behavior in laboratory or field experiments? What are the advantages and limitations of a validation strategy using observed behavior in natural situations? Which validation strategies are appropriate in which circumstances? Especially the use of computers for data collection itself, i.e. computerized questionnaire administration, is the state of the art: routing through the questionnaire is automatic for the interviewer or respondent, some consistency checks can be performed "on the fly", and there is no need for separate data entry. Another example is adaptive testing, widely used in educational studies, where items are administered depending on performance on earlier items. However, the survey community is not even close to exhausting the opportunities offered by computer-assisted interviewing, and efforts to improve methods and technology in this area are scattered and uncoordinated. With this session, we would like to bring together researchers and practitioners thinking about and developing "tools" for computer-assisted survey measurement, with a potential for cross-national usage. This will allow people working in different areas to present their innovative ideas, discuss challenges, learn from each other, and possibly identify opportunities for future collaboration. As an example, we will present the CAMCES project (Computer Assisted Measurement and Coding of Educational Qualifications in Surveys), running at GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, Mannheim, from 2013 to 2016. It has developed and tested an international database of educational qualifications, a universal coding scheme for educational attainment, a questionnaire module available in (at least) 5 languages, and a software interface to allow database searches in the questionnaire and provide context-sensitive (i.e. corresponding to the country in which respondents received their education) response categories to respondents. This will improve measurement quality for the (pivotal) education item in several ways, for example by allowing migrants to report the educational qualification they have actually achieved rather than guessing at some face value 'equivalent' in the survey country; by measuring at a detailed level so as to not confuse respondents with abstract aggregations of educational qualifications on long show cards and losing a substantial amount of information for analysis; and by standard coding routines for harmonization into various comparative education coding schemes during data processing, which could improve cross-survey and cross-national consistency. Some of these are the most used variables in survey based research. Given that for most researchers these are ‘only’ control variables, they are often referred to as ‘background variables’. Measuring individuals’ position in society by means of survey research is of key interest for both academic and policy-related survey research at the national and international levels. Firstly, researchers often want to present descriptive data separately for specific socio-economic or demographic groupings of interest. Secondly, in multivariate analyses of relationships amongst other variables, they need to control for respondents’ socio-economic and demographic characteristics. Thirdly, they may even want to test hypotheses in the area of social stratification research, i.e. using elements of the individuals’ position in society as a ‘main’ variable of interest. In order to do this effectively and permit cumulating research results, surveys need to provide reliable, valid and comparable measures of respondents’ position in the social structure. Comparability can be over time (especially cohorts), space (especially countries), as well as survey projects. While there are only few standard data collection instruments and some coding frameworks for such measures, many survey projects and researchers have put a lot of effort and consideration into the measurement of individuals’ position in society. This session invites papers that reflect on the conceptualisation, data collection, harmonisation and coding of the individuals’ socio-structural position in mono-cultural and cross-cultural, longitudinal and cross-sectional surveys. We particularly welcome papers presenting critical appraisals and innovative solutions to problems of comparative conceptualisation, data collection, harmonisation and analysis. This session intends to bring together researchers and practitioners working with different surveys to facilitate a debate across survey programmes and between data producers and data users. Systematic reviews can be conducted in a qualitative or quantitative manner. The latter includes a meta-analysis. A meta-analysis can be thought of as a collection of statistical analyses used to examine results from individual studies with the general purpose of integrating findings. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are most popular in research disciplines which typically produce experimental studies (e.g., medicine or psychology). Systematic reviews and meta-analyses that rely on observational, non-experimental studies (e.g., survey-based studies and quasi-experimental designs) are less frequently conducted, as is the case with sociology. This is likely due to the fact that observational studies face a number of methodological issues such as confounding or endogenous selection bias. To overcome these issues, various statistical techniques are applied, which are difficult to summarize using standard meta-analytic procedures. We invite papers addressing methodological challenges as well as (qualitative or quantitative) applications of systematic reviews and meta-analyses that specifically focus on observational studies. This may also include meta-analyses that are based on individual person/patient data. Methodologically-oriented contributions could deal with the question "How meta-analysis methods can synthesize data that stem from heterogeneous studies?". Heterogeneity may be induced, for example, because of the use of different estimation procedures (multilevel models, generalized linear models, discrete choice models, etc.) or by the use of different regression specifications. Another source of heterogeneity and a threat to the validity of a systematic review is publication bias. Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen, die vierte gemeinsame Tagung der Deutschen Arbeitsgemeinschaft Statistik (DAGStat) wird unter dem Motto "Statistik unter einem Dach" vom 14.-18.03.2016 in Göttingen stattfinden. Die Beiträge werden aus allen in der DAGStat vertretenen Gesellschaften und Bereichen der Statistik stammen. Ein Austausch über die einzelnen Disziplinen hinweg ist eines der Hauptziele der Tagung. Im Laufe der Tagung werden mehrere Workshops zu den Themen "Event Data Analysis", "Evidence Synthesis", "Copulae in Practice" und "Integer-valued Time Series" angeboten.
