Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen,
hier eine Ausschreibung im Rahmen des Projekts *Large-Scale Data and
Field Research in the Study of Social Networks, *das Mario Small
(Harvard/ Columbia) an der Universität Bremen durchführt.
Wir freuen uns über qualifizierte Bewerbungen bis zum 23. Januar 2022.
Friedvolle und erholsame Feiertage und ein gutes neues Jahr!
Betina Hollstein
The University of Bremen, U Bremen Excellence Chair Prof. Mario L. Small
PhD/ Research Group *"Large-Scale Data and …
[View More]Field Research in the Study
of Social Networks" *at the SOCIUM – Research Center on Inequality and
Social Policy, invites applications for the following position
Post-Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d) in computational social sciences
German pay-scale EG 13 TV-L,
full time/ two years, start of contract: April 1, 2022, end of contract
March, 31, 2024.
The University of Bremen, a mid-sized university with 320 professors,
19.500 students and a full-spectrum of academic disciplines is one of
Europe’s leading research universities and maintains close cooperation
with international universities and non-university research institutions
in the region. The promotion of young researchers is a core element of
Bremen's research strategy.
The 'U Bremen Excellence Chairs' program is a new initiative at
University of Bremen since 2019. It enables internationally outstanding
researchers to establish their own working groups at the university and
to integrate them into a network of excellent research institutions
worldwide in their respective disciplines. Mario L. Small's research
group will study “*Large-Scale Data and Field Research in the Study of
Social Networks*.” One major promise of “big data” was the ability to
understand how social networks emerge, operate, and shape human behavior
on a much larger scale than previously possible. However, as wide-eyed
enthusiasm has given way to sober analysis, researchers and the public
have become increasingly aware of the limitations of such data. This
project will examine the extent to which field-based research (interview
and survey research) can help address the limits of computationally
intensive analysis of large-scale, human mobility-based networks.
Focusing on problems such as boundary specification, locality of
interaction, algorithmic confounding, and misinterpretation of meaning,
we will examine the extent to which bringing field research to bear on
the analysis of large-scale mobility data can help improve our
understanding of the relationship between mobility-based networks and
social inequality.
The postdoctoral researcher will help design, execute, and write the
results of research human mobility and socio-economic inequalities.
Requirements:
·expertise in human mobility or urban sociology and the management of
geocoded datasets, either expertise or demonstrated familiarity with
research in social networks, and a completed Ph.D. degree in either
(urban) sociology, human geography, or a related social science.
·demonstrated evidence of initiative, independence, drive, efficiency,
productivity, the ability to work in groups, and a commitment to high
quality social science research.
·high level of proficiency in English (including demonstrated academic
writing skills), proficiency in German is welcome, but not required.
·experience with working in international projects, organizing academic
events, and developing project proposals, preferably shown through
employment, fellowship, or extended research stay at an international
research institution within the past five years, is preferred but not
required.
·strong interest in developing connections with other researchers;
experience gained at other national/ international research institutions
is welcome.
Salary and benefits are linked to the German employee scale TVL13
(100%). International candidates are highly encouraged to apply.
The review process will begin on January 24, 2022. Applications and
inquiries should be sent electronically as pdf-attachment by January 23,
2022 with the *reference number* 316/21 to
socium-bewerbungen(a)uni-bremen.de <mailto:socium-bewerbungen@uni-bremen.de>
Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.
Please note that the application should be submitted in English and that
we can only accept it if it includes all required documents as a single
PDF file: CV (with publication record), academic certificates, a sample
chapter of your PhD thesis or other written paper, and a cover letter
describing your background, interests, and motivation for applying. The
application letter should also contain information about the data set(s)
you have worked with.
The University of Bremen has received a number of awards for its gender
and diversity policies and is particularly aiming to increase the number
of female researchers. Applications from female candidates,
international applications and applications of academics with a
migration background are explicitly welcome. Disabled persons with the
same professional and personal qualifications will be given preference.

/Call for Papers/
*3rd MASS Workshop
Mobile Apps and Sensors in Surveys*
*https://massworkshop.org* <https://massworkshop.org/>
*Date:
*16-17 June 2022
*Location*
Utrecht University, the Netherlands
The workshop is currently planned as an in-person event.
*Organizing committee*
Bella Struminskaya, Peter Lugtig (Utrecht University), Florian Keusch
(University of Mannheim), Jan K. Höhne (University of Duisburg-Essen)
*Context of the workshop*
Augmenting survey data with data collected …
[View More]from mobile apps, sensors,
and wearables allows researchers to better explore and understand social
reality, further develop research methods, and scale laboratory
experiments. The number of studies that utilize the features built into
smartphones and other wearable devices to study human behavior and
interaction has grown in recent years. Passive mobile data collection
using sensors allows researchers to collect data at a rate and detail
that is not possible with traditional survey methods. However,
incorporating sensor measurements to augment or replace survey questions
through sensors and apps creates methodological challenges around
representativeness, survey design and implementation, measurement, as
well as ethical and legal considerations that are yet to be understood.
This 2-day workshop is jointly organized by researchers from the
department of Methods and Statistics at Utrecht University, the
Professorship for Statistics and Methodology at the University of
Mannheim, and the Department of Political Science at the University of
Duisburg-Essen. The workshop is free of charge for participants, but
participants are expected to cover their own travel and lodging costs.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from
different disciplines to discuss the current state of their research on
the use of mobile apps, sensors, and wearables in survey data
collection. The workshop is only open to participants whose abstracts
will be accepted for a paper presentation.
Two previous MASS workshops were held at the University of Mannheim
(2019) and virtually (2021). The program as well as some presentations
from these earlier workshops can be found at https://massworkshop.org.
For the 3rd MASS workshop, we invite contributions that focus, among
others, on the following methodological issues when using mobile apps,
sensors, and wearables in surveys:
* Technical aspects of mobile apps, sensors, and wearables
o Different ways to collect sensor, app, and wearable data
o Building apps for Android and iOS
o Data processing and storage
* Study and app design
o Look and feel of apps
o Usability studies
o Use of incentives
o Giving feedback to respondents
* Implementation
o Willingness to participate and consent
o Methods to invite and communicate with study participants
o Study length and study intensity
o Legal, ethical, and privacy considerations
* Quality of data from mobile apps, sensor, and wearables
o Errors of non-representation (self-selection, coverage, and
nonparticipation)
o Measurement error (prevention, modeling, and correction)
o Validity of measurements with mobile apps, sensors, and wearables
* Data analysis
o Analysis of sensor data
o Combining survey data with data from mobile apps, sensors, and
wearables
We encourage submission of work in progress and are particularly
interested in studies that used experimental designs to test strategies
to collect data from mobile apps, sensors, and wearables. We are open to
both empirical studies as well as descriptions of research data
collection infrastructure (e.g., front- or backend of an app) and
processing of data from apps and sensors.
*Submission process and timeline*
Please submit your abstract for the workshop to b.struminskaya(a)uu.nl.
The abstract should contain a research question, data collection
procedures (e.g., a description of the app), and results, if available.
If results are not available yet, the abstract should outline the type
of analyses that will be presented at the workshop.
Participation in the workshop is only possible when an abstract is
accepted for the workshop. We intend to keep the workshop limited to
about 35 participants. We will aim for a representation of diverse
topics, methodological approaches, and research groups.
*Timeline:*
* 28 February 2022: Deadline for abstract submission.
* 21 March 2022: Feedback on acceptance will be provided.
* 1 June 2022: Deadline for handout submission - all participants will
be required to submit a 6-page handout presenting context,
screenshots, tables, or other supporting materials for the workshop.
All participants are expected to read all handouts before coming to
the workshop.
* 16 & 17 June 2022: Workshop
