(Newbie Alert: both in BaseX and C#) Hello folks, I have been considering Java and C# for BaseX-based development. My Java experiments are going quite well. C##: First, I created 4 new blank projects in Visual Studio 2010 for the sample apps (BaseXClient.cs, CreateExample.cs, Example.cs, QueryExample.cs). After I added the references "System" and "Microsoft.CSharp" most of the errors went away, but there are 2 remaining: (1) The types "Session" and "Query" are not recognized. I am sure they are somehow part of BaseX. How do I add support for those types? It probably involves creating some reference and adding it, correct? (2) The other type that is not recognized is "Stopwatch". Microsoft provides one such class: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ebf7z0sw.aspx which has a "Start" method and a "ElapsedMilliseconds" property. That class is not recognized, however. I am using the provided source code, verbatim: https://svn.uni-konstanz.de/dbis/basex/trunk/api/etc/c%23/Example.cs Thanks again for such a great package! -Ramon

[BaseX 6.2.9 - BaseXWin] request after an 'updating' function declaration always returns root()

Dear all, in BaseXWin 6.2.9, the execution of any request will always return root() when following the declaration of an 'updating' function. declare updating function local:update1($mark as element()) { if (false()) then () else () }; (: any request not returning root() :) /blablabli ---> root() removing 'updating' from the function declaration will give the expected answer. best regards, and thank you for your fantastic DBMS.

Another question about the "QueryExample" tutorial app

The "QueryExample" app contains the following statement: String query = "for $x in doc('etc/xml/input.xml')//li return $x"; What is the semantics of that? Does it mean that the (potentially huge) file `input.xml' will be converted into a binary database every time that statement is executed? The above exemplifies a very common problem with XML query examples: The authors provide ONE step when we need TWO: (1) An initialization of the XML tree, done ONCE. (2) A retrieval statement, which is done MULTIPLE times. In short, let's say I have a binary database called "Input" (derived from `input.xml'). How can I refer to it in the QueryExample app? I have been investigating a LOT of alternatives (programming languages, OSs, toolkits, etc.) and have concluded that the best approach for my application (XML read-only) is to use XPath (plus some XQuery). I have found some introductory examples written in C++ (Xerces) where the authors go through all kinds of complex convolutions to redirect the result of the XPath query to the screen. I hate to state the obvious, but we newbies do not want to send the XML elements to the screen. We rather assign them to some variable. That is the request I have. I think the application "QueryExample" and similar could use some way to assign the retrieved values to a variable. Thanks again! -Ramon (I am not in this mailing list)
