Symposium der DAGStat »Big Data - Big Brother oder Big Chances?« am 24. April 2015 an der Beuth Hochschule für Technik Berlin möglich. Dies wird ermöglicht durch immer leistungsfähigere Computer und Smartphones sowie durch immer weiter verbreitete Online-Dienste und Sensoren im Alltag. Nach Bekanntwerden der NSA-Affäre besteht der Eindruck, dass überall der »Big Brother« mitlauscht und die Daten in seinem Sinne missbraucht. Aber muss das so sein oder gibt es auch »Big Chances« bei der Verwendung der massenhaften Daten? Unter dem Titel „Big Data – Big Brother oder Big Chances?“ beschäftigt sich das diesjährige DAGStat-Symposium mit der Frage, unter welchen Bedingungen „Big Data“ eine Chance sein kann und was technologisch überhaupt möglich ist. Dabei spielt die Statistik eine große Rolle, da sie die Werkzeuge für das Analysieren der Daten liefert. Daher wird insbesondere die Frage behandelt, was die Statistik in den verschiedensten Anwendungsfeldern von der Medizin über die amtliche Statistik bis zum Marketing dazu beitragen kann, dass aus „Big Data“ kein „Big Brother“ sondern „Big Chances“ werden. While some technologies such as smartphones already enable us to experience new ways to interact in social environments, other technologies such as large scale multi touch surfaces, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality glasses, and intelligent software are at the verge of driving these experiences even further. The theme of the 12th conference of the European Sociological Association (ESA) is " Differences, inequalities and sociological imagination." In accordance with this thematic RN21 especially invites papers on quantitative approaches to inequalities and differences, as well as methodological papers.
