Call for Papers 6th MASS Workshop Mobile Apps and Sensors in Surveys https://massworkshop.org Date 4-5 June 2025 Location London School of Economics (LSE), London, UK Organizing committee Local organizers: Patrick Sturgis (London School of Economics), Oriol Bosch (Oxford University) Scientific committee: Bella Struminskaya (Utrecht University), Peter Lugtig (Utrecht University), Florian Keusch (University of Mannheim), and Jan Karem Höhne (DZHW, Leibniz University Hannover) Context of the workshop Mobile devices allow researchers to collect data through built-in sensors, such as GPS, accelerometers, and other sensors, passively collect data in-browser, and use apps in addition to self-reports. Passive mobile data collection can potentially decrease measurement errors and reduce respondent burden. Active data collection using apps, camera, microphone, and other sensors allows researchers to broaden the research questions they want to study. Incorporating new measurements to augment or replace survey questions through sensors and apps brings challenges for representativeness, survey design and implementation, and measurement. This also includes ethical and legal considerations that are yet to be understood. The goal of this workshop is to bring together around 40 researchers from different disciplines to discuss the current state of their work on the use of mobile apps and sensors in survey data collection. The workshop is only open to participants whose abstracts will be accepted for a paper presentation. Upon acceptance participants are expected to submit a handout (max. of 5 pages). The workshop is free of charge for participants, but participants are expected to cover their own travel and lodging costs. The program, selected presentations and keynotes from five earlier MASS workshops can be found at https://massworkshop.org. Scope of the workshop For the sixth MASS workshop, we invite contributions that focus, among others, on the following methodological issues when using mobile apps, sensors, and wearables in surveys: * Technical aspects of mobile apps and sensors * Different ways to collect sensor data * Building apps for Android and iOS * Data processing and storage * Study and app design * Look and feel of apps * Usability studies * Use of incentives * Giving feedback to respondents * Implementation * Willingness to participate and informed consent * Methods to invite and communicate with study participants * Study length and study intensity * Legal considerations * Ethical and privacy considerations * Quality of sensor data * Errors of non-representation (e.g., self-selection, coverage, and nonparticipation) * Measurement error (e.g., prevention, modeling, and correction) * Data analysis * Analyzing sensor data (e.g., through machine and deep learning) * Combining survey, sensor, and app data We encourage submission of work in progress and are particularly interested in studies that use experimental designs to test strategies to collect data from mobile apps, sensors, and wearables. We are open to both empirical studies as well as descriptions of research data collection and infrastructure (e.g., front- or backend of an app) and processing of data from apps and sensors. Here’s the description: /This session focusses on research that explores, develops, or tests visual methods applied in unstructured data collection efforts for hard to study populations. These are populations like low literate people, people with cognitive limitations, (mental) health challenges, or subgroups with physical restraints like in hearing or speaking, whose voices may be under- or misrepresented in research. They all have in common to be at greater risk of communicative, cognitive, and/or motivational restraints. As a result, these limitations may pose a threat to data quality and research findings may be hampered. / /In this session, we welcome theoretical and empirical contributions that address the use of visual methods in unstructured data collection for hard to study populations. Social media platforms, websites, digital archives, sensor networks, and transactional records provide vast quantities of information about human behavior, interaction, and social organization. This influx of new kinds of data has been accompanied by the rapid development of methods to analyze it, particularly within the emerging field of /Computational Social Sciences/. Methods such as social network analysis, quantitative text analysis, and machine learning have advanced significantly and found applications far beyond sociology, extending into fields such as computer science, information science, and social physics (e.g., Tindall et al., 2022). Meanwhile, artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly employed to extract patterns, predict behaviors, and model social phenomena (e.g., Borch & Pardo-Guerra, 2023). At the same time, methods have emerged that allow for the analysis of large volumes of textual data (e.g., Evans & Aceves, 2016; Macanovic, 2022; Nelson, 2020). These tools and techniques have transformed the ways in which we approach, frame, and analyze social data. While computational methods and data analytics have expanded our technical capabilities, there is a growing recognition that sociological theory has not evolved at the same pace to adequately address and interpret the complexities of the digital era. Existing theories often struggle to incorporate or make sense of digital phenomena, leading to a gap between empirical findings and theoretical understanding (e.g., Bonikowski & Nelson, 2022; Schwarz, 2021, p. 2). Simultaneously, the traditional role of social theory is fundamentally changing. The challenge shifts “from thinking about the most cost-effective data that one needs to collect in order to support, or refute, a hypothesis, to figuring out how to structure a mountain of data into meaningful categories of knowledge” (Goldberg, 2015, p. 2). To address this challenge, sociologists must engage in /conceptual and theoretical innovation/. This involves revising and expanding conceptual frameworks to make them compatible with and relevant to the analysis of digital data. Such an endeavor would not only strengthen the explanatory power of sociology but also enhance its capacity to provide meaningful interpretations of digital interactions, structures, and their societal implications. We ask for contributions that study processes both at the conceptual and interpretative level of social theory and address at least one of the following questions: (1) How do core sociological concepts evolve in the context of processes such as datafication and platformiza¬tion? What do notions like “action” and “agency,” “communication,” or “interaction” mean in the digital space? How should foundational concepts like “social structures” and “order formation” be reinterpreted when they emerge on platforms? What constitutes digital actors and digital “identities”? (2) How do digital platforms – as new forms of social organization – influence the differentiation of society? How do they affect social inequality? How does the culture of society change in relation to its social structure? Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen, das GESIS Panel ist 10 Jahre alt geworden! Wir freuen uns, Sie zu diesem Anlass zu einem einmaligen Call einzuladen: 10 Minuten Befragungszeit im GESIS Panel.pop zum 10. Geburtstag! Das GESIS Panel.pop Population Sample ist ein Mixed-Mode Panel aufbauend auf zufallsbasierten Stichproben der erwachsenen deutschsprachigen Wohnbevölkerung in Deutschland und erlaubt damit Schlüsse auf die Allgemeinbevölkerung. Etwa 5.000 Befragte werden viermal pro Jahr webbasiert oder per Papierfragebogen interviewt. Nach 10 Jahren Datenerhebung mit dem GESIS Panel.pop im regulären Betrieb ist ein thematisch diverser Datensatz mit quer- und längsschnittlichen Befragungsmodulen entstanden (inklusive der GESIS Panel.pop längsschnittlichen Kernstudien<https://www.gesis.org/gesis-panel/dokumentation/dokumentation-gesis-panelpo…>). Alle Forschenden haben Zugriff auf den gesamten Datensatz des GESIS Panel.pop<https://www.gesis.org/gesis-panel/datenzugang> (bislang 53 Befragungswellen), den relevanten Variablen für die Soziologie, Psychologie, Politikwissenschaft, Wirtschaftswissenschaften und andere Disziplinen enthalten. Forschende können über Regular Submissions<https://www.gesis.org/gesis-panel/datenerhebung/datenerhebung-gesis-panelpo…> oder Short Submissions<https://www.gesis.org/gesis-panel/datenerhebung/datenerhebung-gesis-panelpo…> die Survey-Fragen für Ihre Forschung zur kostenlosen Datenerhebung einreichen - allerdings sind Befragungsslots auf eine Dauer von maximal fünf Minuten begrenzt. Zum Anlass des 10. Geburtstag des GESIS Panel.pop bieten wir nun einmalig einen Survey Slot mit einer Befragungsdauer von 10 Minuten an (maximal 50 Survey-Fragen/Items). Die Einreichungen im Rahmen dieses Calls durchlaufen eine kompetitive Begutachtung, wobei die beste Studie den Erhebungsslot für eine Datenerhebung erhält. About 5,000 respondents are interviewed four times a year, either web-based or via paper questionnaires.
