Geschätzte KollegInnen, Wir möchten gerne - wie viele andere KollegInnen - unsere Sessions auf der ESA Konferenz eingehend bewerben, die in Zagreb von 15. Bis 19. Juli stattfindet. Die Deadline für Abstrakteinreichungen ist bereits am 18. November. Die erste Session beschäftigt sich mit methodologischen Herausforderungen bei Flüchtlingsstudien, die zweite Session mit sensitiven Fragen. As a consequence large-scale studies on asylum seekers are conducted in several European countries to shed light on their qualifications and on their labor market integration, on attitudinal and behavioral dynamics and on their long-term process of acculturation. In this session we want to encourage our potential speakers to specifically focus on methodological challenges in these ongoing surveys from a total survey error perspective. This concept tries to capture various forms of biases during the whole survey process and aims for calculating sampling errors, measurement errors or specification errors. Concerning sampling we are confronted with mobile and often undocumented populations where the claim of representativeness is hard to fulfill (selection errors). Concerning questionnaire development the issue of language barriers and the use of sensitive questions has to be taken into account. Overall, the issue of cross-cultural equivalence is particularly relevant because the survey participants come from diverse countries of origin and are often not used to Western survey conceptions. During fieldwork potential mode effects, certain interviewer characteristics or classical measurement errors (such as social desirability or cultural response styles) demand further attention (measurement errors). We also have to consider ethical barriers because asylum seekers are often still in a state of emergency and have potentially undergone traumatic experiences. Thus for this session we are seeking for contributions which try to estimate the quality of the surveys precisely focusing on certain levels of bias. Also mixed-methods studies are highly welcome which highlight certain potentials as well as limits when it comes to quantitative studies with refugees. The findings should contribute to an enhanced knowledge how to carry out surveys among asylum seekers, especially in the current European context. Sensitive questions in surveys - What are sensitive topics? Over the years different methods have been developed and tested to encourage participants to respond in such surveys (avoiding unit nonresponse), to answer sensitive questions (avoiding item non-reponse) and to give honest answers (avoiding bias caused by false or socially desirable answers). Those methods include sampling strategies, framing and formulating items so that potentially problematic answers seem "normal", enhancing the perceived privacy and also randomized response techniques that enable at least estimates for aggregates. However, as all those methods come with potential drawbacks, it seems reasonable to ascertain as precisely as possible in which cases such methods are really needed, i.e. which topics and items have to be considered sensitive. Besides classical examples such as sexual behavior, drugs, criminal and ethical problems and attitudes involving suicide and abortion, we also know from cross-national surveys that widely-used indicators such as income are highly sensitive and missing rates vary across countries. We also want to point out that people of various ethnic backgrounds, age groups or attitudinal characteristics may differ in what topics people consider sensitive. For this session, we particularly encourage submissions on findings about what topics are sensitive topics in which populations. We welcome studies using classical methods to detect sensitive questions and their impacts such as described above but we particularly aim for new concepts and new methods how to identify the sensitivity of questions among different societal or cultural groups.

Challenges and Solutions“ Session Coordinators: Wiebke Breustedt, M.A.; Anna Ebert, M.A. (Universität Duisburg-Essen, Zentrum für Hochschulqualitätsentwicklung) The increasing availability of accessible and affordable survey tools provides ample opportunities to gather data on individuals’ subjective perspective. More and more, such data are used as evidence in practical fields of application including quality assurance in higher education. In post-Bologna Europe, the newly revised European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ESG) emphasize the importance of data including survey data from students and staff as they help stakeholders at all levels to make informed decisions (ENQA et al. 2015, Standard 1.7). Social scientists who collect and analyze data for quality assurance purposes at institutions of higher education face a triple challenge: to collect valid and reliable survey data (Ansmann & Seyfried 2018), to coordinate the questionnaires with evaluators within the quality assurance departments (Ganseuer & Pistor 2016) and to ensure the practical applicability of the results (Rousseau 2006). Striking a balance between scientific rigor and practical utility concerns the entire survey lifecycle (Survey Research Center 2016). Issues include, but are not limited to the following: • Questionnaire design: Which concepts should be measured? Who should be involved in the questionnaire design process and how? • Data collection: How to ensure data validity despite limited financial and human resources as well as data protection requirements? • Data analysis: Who is the target audience? How to analyze the data to be useful for quality assurance while adhering to principles of good scientific practice? How to strike a balance between data protection requirements and loss of information? • Application: How to increase the acceptance and application of the results by decision-makers? We welcome papers from researchers and evaluation practitioners working at the interface between data collection and application for quality assurance in higher education. ***Apologies for cross-posting*** Dear colleagues, we would like to draw your attention to the call for abstracts for our session “Lessons learned from studies on refugees” at the 8th Conference of the European Survey Research Association, 15th-19th July 2019 in Zagreb, Croatia. Details of our session can be found on the conference website: https://www.europeansurveyresearch.org/conferences/sessionCategories?sess=47 : ---------------------------- Due to the increasing refugees’ movements over the world and the increasing influx of refugees into Western countries (especially Europe), many studies on refugees have been conducted or started. These studies range from narrow topics on specific groups and/or their situations at specific times or places, their motivations or reasons to flee their countries, to large-scale surveys that are either newly started or that try to integrate refugee populations into their existing samples. Studies on refugees face special problems due to the specific (legal, economic, social, medical etc.) conditions refugees are living in, e.g. conducting interviews in crowded places like group accommodations, ethical challenges of the researcher as a non-intervening observer, misunderstandings of the aims of the researchers to the interviewed refugee. But for all that it is crucial to interview refugees adequately, if one aims to gain meaningful results. Therefore, in this session, we want to discuss possible solutions or research strategies that were applied to deal with these special conditions and challenges of studies on refugees. We are especially interested in experiences made by applying these strategies, so that researchers can learn from each others' trails and errors during their work with/on refugees. This session concentrates on solutions that can be implemented in or transferred to quantitative-empirical studies. We invite contributions from researchers who report how they dealt with specific problems and how these survey technics worked in practice. Im Institut für Soziologie des Fachbereichs Gesellschaftswissenschaften der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main ist an der Professur von Frau Prof. Dr. Daniela Grunow zum 01.01.2019 die Stelle eines/einer wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterin/Mitarbeiters (E13 TV-G-U) zunächst befristet für die Dauer von drei Jahren ganztags zu besetzen. Die Aufgaben des/der Stelleninhabers/in liegen vornehmlich im Bereich der universitären im Fach Soziologie in allen Studiengängen einschließlich der Bildungswissenschaften und in den Lehramtsstudiengängen. Der Schwerpunkt sollte bei Veranstaltungen im Bereich der Quantitativen Analyse gesellschaftlichen Wandels in Deutschland und im internationalen Vergleich liegen. Lehrangebote zu den Themengebieten quantitative Methoden, quantitative Inhaltsanalyse, soziale Ungleichheit und Familie sind wünschenswert. Es besteht eine regelmäßige Lehrverpflichtung von 4 Semesterwochenstunden. Gelegenheit zur selbstbestimmten Forschung, insbesondere zur Weiterqualifikation, sowie zur Mitarbeit an laufenden nationalen und internationalen Forschungsprojekten wird gegeben. Einstellungsvoraussetzungen sind neben der qualifizierten Promotion im Bereich der Sozialwissenschaften, einschlägige Kenntnisse in den oben genannten Arbeitsbereichen der ausgezeichneten Kenntnisse in der Anwendung fortgeschrittener quantitativer Analyseverfahren in Stata und SPSS, nachgewiesen durch national und international begutachtete Zeitschriftenpublikationen. Best regards Alexandra Mergener Session details: Dealing with International Comparative Survey Instruments in the Field of Education and Occupational Status: Challenges and Achievements Over the past decades, the number of international comparative approaches and studies in the fields of educational and occupational research increased substantially. Even if these approaches lead to tremendous insights into these research fields and are helpful to reflect and interpret the results of one’s own country from another perspective, there are challenges and sometimes limitations in achieving (effectively) comparable results. Different cultural and economic settings lead to a diverse understanding of concepts. Especially in case of education and occupational status, there are system specific characteristics researchers have to deal with in every country. Those hinder measurement, harmonization and finally comparison of concepts. With international classifications, scales or indices of education and occupational status (e.g. ISCED, CASMIN, ISCO, ISEI, SIOP, EGP), there are survey instruments which should enhance the international comparability. Nevertheless, it has been shown, for instance, that the ‘International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED)’ or ’years of education’ measure the educational attainments in cross-national surveys inadequately, as they do not sufficiently capture the distinct value of vocational training in some countries. Additionally, surveys could ask for occupations or the occupational status in a different way (e.g. asking for job titles or job tasks), depending on the national concept und understanding of occupations. Thus, in the proposed session we are going to look for contributions focusing on experiences with the international comparability of classifications of education and occupations or occupational status. We are interested in the ways researchers handle the coding of different educational and occupational variables and how they transfer them in international classifications. What kind of analytical approaches could enhance the international comparability? Survey researchers who are active in these fields of research are welcome to present their (recent) studies and their strategies to deal with it or to discuss existing problems and challenges with the international comparability of these survey instruments.
