This time, the Mobile Apps and Sensors in Surveys (MASS; see https://massworkshop.org/) workshop takes place jointly with the Current Innovations in Probability-based Household Internet Panel Research (CIPHER; see https://cesr.usc.edu/about_us) conference. CIPHER will be held from March 7-8, and presenters at either event are invited to attend both events.
Context of the workshop
Mobile devices allow researchers to collect data through built-in sensors, such as GPS, accelerometers, and other sensors, passively collect data in-browser, and use apps in addition to self-reports. Passive mobile data collection can potentially decrease measurement errors and reduce respondent burden. Active data collection using apps, camera, microphone, and other sensors allows researchers to broaden the research questions they want to study. Incorporating new measurements to augment or replace survey questions through sensors and apps brings challenges for representativeness, survey design and implementation, and measurement. This also includes ethical and legal considerations that are yet to be understood.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together around 40 researchers from different disciplines to discuss the current state of their work on the use of mobile apps and sensors in survey data collection. The workshop is only open to people who are presenting a paper at CIPHER or MASS. Upon acceptance participants are expected to submit a handout (max. of 5 pages). The fourth MASS workshop was held at the University of Manchester in June 2023 (see https://massworkshop.org/2022/04/13/materials_2023/).
Importantly, even though MASS and CIPHER take place jointly, both events manage their submission and registration process separately. Researchers are eligible to submit abstracts to MASS and CIPHER, but the content of the abstracts must differ and should be tailored to the scope of the events. Participants accepted for CIPHER can also participate in MASS, and vice versa.
Topic scope of the workshop
For the fifth MASS workshop, we invite contributions that focus, among others, on the following issues when using mobile apps and sensors in surveys:
- Technical aspects of mobile apps and sensors
o Different ways to collect sensor data
o Building apps for Android and iOS
o Data processing and storage
- Study and app design
o Look and feel of apps
o Usability studies
o Use of incentives
o Giving feedback to respondents
- Implementation
o Willingness to participate and informed consent
o Methods to invite and communicate with study participants
o Study length and study intensity
o Legal considerations
o Ethical and privacy considerations
- Quality of sensor data
o Errors of non-representation (e.g., self-selection, coverage, and non-participation)
o Measurement error (e.g., prevention, modeling, and correction)
- Data analysis
o Analyzing sensor data (e.g., through machine and deep learning)
o Combining survey, sensor, and app data
We specifically encourage submission of work in progress and are particularly interested in studies that used an experimental design to test strategies to collect data using mobile apps and sensors successfully. We are open to both empirical studies as well as descriptions of data collection infrastructure (e.g., front- or backend of an app) and processing of data from apps and sensors.
Travel support for PhD students
MASS workshop can provide travel support (up to $600) for PhD students. PhD students who want to be considered for travel support need to state this in their submission email and provide an explanation for why they should be considered for travel support.
Submission process and timeline
Please submit your abstract (max. 500 words) for the workshop to hoehne(a)dzhw.eu<mailto:hoehne@dzhw.eu>. The abstract should contain a research question, data collection procedures/the description of the app, and results if available. If results are not available yet, the abstract should outline the type of analyses that will be presented at the workshop and whether data collection took place already.
Participation in the workshop is only possible when an abstract is accepted for the workshop. We intend to keep the workshop limited to about 40 participants.

Social Norms: Emergence, Stability, Social Change
Conference at Centro Stefano Franscini, Monte Verita, Ascona,
Switzerland, July 7 to 10, 2024
Organized by Andreas Diekmann, University of Leipzig & ETH Zurich and
Jörg Rössel, Univiversiy of Zurich
Social norms are fundamental for the social cohesion of societies.
They constrain human actions, but they are also of essential
importance in enabling us to act at all, coordinate actions and solve
cooperation problems. Theoretical and empirical studies of social
norms are conducted across disciplines in sociology, psychology,
behavioral economics, political science, philosophy, and other social
and human sciences. While much of existing research is concerned with
compliance with social norms, in the planned conference we will also
focus particular attention on analyses of the emergence and change of
social norms. While the main thrust of the conference is on the
explanation of norm emergence and norm change, systematic studies of
international/cultural differences in norms or historical change of
norms are also welcome. In addition, we will focus on applications of
the findings from research on how social norms change and operate.
Today, there are numerous new findings in this field, which are
particularly relevant in the context of the climate problem and energy
transition but also for other currently debated issues like changing
gender norms and the use of artificial intelligence, to name just a
few. Since norms also constrain human action, they might be perceived
as harmful by those who are subject to the norms or by external
observers. One example is the practice of "female genital mutilation"
(FMG). The conference will bring together early career and senior
researchers from various countries and disciplines to share new
research findings. Presentations may focus on both basic research,
such as the development of new theoretical perspectives and the
testing of theories, and policy-relevant applications of norms
research. Key topics are:
(1) New perspectives, hypotheses, and empirical findings concerning
the emergence of social norms.
(2) Addressing the question on how to measure social norms.
Contributions from different methodological perspectives are welcome.
(3) Studies on international/cultural differences in norms of
historical change of social norms.
(4) The state of knowledge on conditions that contribute to the change
of social norms or to cultural differences in social norms.
(5) The contribution of social norms to ensure social cooperation.
(6) Stability of social norms. The role of rewards and sanctions.
(7) The emergence, change, and decay of signaling norms.
(8) Inducing change when norms are “sticky” and detrimental.
(9) Applications of norm research in the area of e.g. energy
transition, development policies, health behavior, law making, gender
relations, artificial intelligence and other fields.
(10) Other norm-related topics.

gerne möchten wir Sie auf neu verfügbare Daten der BAuA-Arbeitszeitbefragung 2021 aufmerksam machen.
Die Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin (BAuA) führt seit 2015 mit der BAuA-Arbeitszeitbefragung eine repräsentative Panelbefragung von Erwerbstätigen in Deutschland mit über 20.000 Befragten durch. Ziel der Befragung ist es, Zusammenhänge zwischen der Arbeitszeitgestaltung, weiteren Arbeitsbedingungen sowie der Gesundheit und Zufriedenheit von Erwerbstätigen zu erfassen. Zusätzlich sollen Trends im Hinblick auf die Arbeitszeitrealitäten von Erwerbstätigen in Deutschland abgebildet werden. Neben zahlreichen wiederholt erhobenen Inhalten enthält die BAuA-Arbeitszeitbefragung 2021 einen Schwerpunkt zu Auswirkungen der im Erhebungszeitraum andauernden Covid-19-Pandemie und damit einhergehenden Veränderungen in der Flexibilität des Arbeitsortes und der Arbeitszeit.

Advances in survey sampling with social media advertisements

We invite paper submissions on “Advances in survey sampling with social media advertisements” for a tentatively approved special issue in the International Journal of Social Research Methodology<https://www.tandfonline.com/journals/tsrm20> (IJSRM).
Survey sampling with social media advertisements was virtually non-existent a decade ago, but it has been increasingly adopted in recent years, especially for otherwise hard-to-reach populations. The increasing use of the approach warrants a more systematic review of its methodological particularities, advantages, disadvantages, and challenges; as well as practical and theoretical knowledge sharing of best practices using this method.
Submissions to the issue will either (a) describe empirical research that samples via social media advertising and sheds light on relevant methodological questions or (b) make novel theoretical or methodological contributions. Please note that the call is not limited to research using a specific social media platform.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
● Discussion of suitable/innovative use cases (e.g., surveying otherwise hard-to-reach populations),
● Comparing social media recruited samples to external benchmarks or to one another,
● Strategies for measuring and mitigating bias,
● Influence of different features of ad campaigns – such as campaign optimization strategies, campaign length, audience targeting, ad placements, text, and images/video – on the cost and sample composition of social media recruited samples,
● Use of AI-based optimization features (such as lookalike audiences and automated A/B testing) and their impact on the survey process and sample composition,
● Use of advertisements in combination with chatbots, messenger services or survey apps,
● Role and impact of the design decisions taken regarding features comparable to “classic” survey design elements (e.g., wording of advertisements in their function as survey invitation),
● Impact and management of other contextual factors – such as user comments on advertisements, the advertiser’s identity or timing of the survey,
● Ethical and data privacy considerations, and
● Insights from social media survey sampling about social media platform algorithms or survey research methods more broadly.
Please submit extended abstracts (a maximum of 1000 words), along with co-authors and affiliations, to ad-sampling-si(a)gesis.org<mailto:ad-sampling-si@gesis.org> by January 12, 2024. We anticipate providing feedback on acceptance in Spring 2024.
Please note that IJSRM has a two-stage submission process for Special Issues<https://files.taylorandfrancis.com/TSRM_SpecialIssue_Guidelines.pdf>. After an initial review and expression of interest in the Special Issue proposal, the editors have invited us to submit a Stage 2 proposal.
Timeline
* October 25, 2023: Call for Papers issued
* January 12, 2024: Extended abstracts due
* February 5, 2024: Authors are informed about inclusion in stage two submission to the journal
* February 9, 2024: Stage 2 submission
* Spring 2024: Upon final acceptance of the Special Issue, authors receive feedback on their papers and an invitation to submit a full paper. Full papers will be due for submission six months after this date.
Reviewing process
The Special Issue will apply a multi-stage reviewing process. First, the submission of an extended abstract (maximum of 1,000 words) is required. These extended abstracts are mandatory and serve as a basis for the guest editors to decide on the inclusion of individual papers in the stage 2 submission to the journal. After the positive review of the Special Issue, authors are invited to submit a full paper which will be subject to peer-review with at least two experts in the field.

DGOF Best Paper Award 2024
The German Society for Online Research (DGOF) annually recognizes
outstanding scientific contributions in online research through the DGOF
Best Paper Award for a researcher or group of researchers.
The DGOF by-laws define “online research” as any type of research about
computers or other devices that are connected by a network, in
particular the Internet. Online research includes online based data
collection (e.g., web surveys in online panels), mobile research with
smartphones, tablets, and wearables, and the collection and analysis of
social media data, administrative data, data from passive measurements,
and other Big Data sources.
The prize will be awarded to a paper that provides a fundamental
scientific contribution to the advancement of the methods of online
research. Topics that are suitable for the award can be found in the
program of the annual General Online Research (GOR) conference
(www.gor.de). Both theoretical/conceptual and empirical/methodological
papers are considered for the award. Papers that do not focus on online
research but, for example, merely use online data collection (e.g.,
through a web survey) to answer a substantive research question will not
be considered.
The award is worth 500 Euro and will be presented at the annual GOR
conference. An abstract (and, if available, a preprint) of the
award-winning paper will be posted to the DGOF website (www.dgof.de). To
be considered for the award, papers must be published in an outlet that
uses a peer-review process (e.g., peer-reviewed journal, full papers in
peer-reviewed conference proceedings, refereed book chapter) at the time
of submission. Papers written in German or English and published not
earlier than 2022 (if the paper was published online-first, then the
online-first publication date counts) can be submitted for the DGOF Best
Paper Award 2024.
