Below you will find information on how to apply for the different formats. ------------------------------------- CONFERENCE SCOPE ------------------------------------- The Symposium is an interdisciplinary venue that brings together researchers from a diverse range of disciplines to contribute to the definition and exploration of the societal challenges in Computational Social Science, especially around the topics of inequality and imbalance. We welcome submissions in the intersection of the social sciences and the computer sciences, including (a) new approaches for understanding social phenomena and addressing societal challenges, (b) improving methods for computational social science, (c) and understanding the influence of the Web and digital technologies on society. -------------------------------- DATASET CHALLENGE -------------------------------- Submission deadline: September 1, 2018 Submit via Easychair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=csssymposium18 We provide links to three suggested datasets on the topic of political communication and ask participants to creatively and innovatively engage with these datasets. A jury will select the best presentation (including any created resources, such as secondary datasets or analysis code) to be awarded the very first Euro CSS Dataset Challenge Award. The work presented at the symposium can be early stage, but should be methodically sound and provide either preliminary insights into an interesting research question or first inductively-reached conclusions of systematic patterns of bias in the dataset. These can also be on a meta-level or may be designated to positioning the work in broader theoretical contexts, e.g., about biases in the data collection. Submissions should be abstracts of approx. 2-3 pages (maximum up to 1000 words plus references and figures). It's just like a poetry slam, but with science instead of poems. Slammers are completely free to do whatever they want on stage, everything is allowed including slides, games, the more creative, the better! The only two rules are: 1) The topic of the slam has to be related to data science / computational social science or to social media, online data or digital behavioral data, and 2) Presentations should not take more than 8 minutes. The EuroCSS Science Slam will take place in the evening of December 5th in Die Wohngemeinschaft (https://www.die-wohngemeinschaft.net/en/) To present, send an email to garcia(a)csh.ac.at<mailto:garcia@csh.ac.at> with a short proposal of your topic for the slam and we will contact you. Nutzerkonferenz des Deutschen Zentrums für Hochschul- und Wissenschaftsforschung (DZHW) aufmerksam machen, die im kommenden Jahr am 16. und 17. Mai 2019 in Hannover stattfinden und federführend vom Forschungsdatenzentrum (fdz.DZHW) organisiert wird. Die Veranstaltung trägt den Titel "1st International DZHW User Conference on Dynamics in the Student and Academic Life Course" und bietet die Möglichkeit zur Vorstellung und Diskussion aktueller empirischer Längsschnittanalysen aus dem Bereich der Hochschulforschung, wobei die Einbeziehung von DZHW-Daten willkommen, aber nicht verpflichtend ist. CfP -- MZES Open Social Science Conference 2019: Practicing New Standards in Transparency and Reproducibility This conference is a forum for practicing and discussing credibility, transparency and replicability in the social sciences. About a decade ago, John Ioannidis claimed that "most published research findings are false". While seeming outrageous at the time, a growing body of meta-scientific research in the behavioral and social sciences substantiated this claim, causing uncertainty about the trustworthiness of published scientific findings. We believe that threats to the validity of published findings in the social sciences are widespread and systemic. Therefore, this conference promotes introspection about the current state of social science research and exchange on the opportunities for institutional and methodological improvement in the future. The conference is supported by the Berkeley Initiative for Transparency in the Social Sciences (BITSS<http://bitss.org/>) and will take place from 25-27 January 2019 in Mannheim, Germany.
